Free Nicotine Patches, Lozenges, and Counseling for DC Residents

Quitting smoking is the single most important thing you can do to improve your health. Tobacco use can increase your chances of getting many diseases, such as lung cancer, heart disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including emphysema.

Freedom From Smoking

ALADC offers Freedom From Smoking®, a behavior modification therapy program to quit smoking. This program is an 8-session support group program that helps group members better understand their nicotine addiction and how to successfully quit tobacco. It is offered at community and corporate sites in the District.

For more information about this program, contact Charles Debnam, Deputy Director, Health Education Services (202) 546-5864 or cdebnam@aladc.org.

This program is available online as well. Visit ALA’s Freedom From Smoking site for registration and more information.

ALADC also implements the D.C. Tobacco Free Families Campaign (DCTFF) on behalf of the DC Department of Health. The Campaign provides extensive cessation services for smokers wanting to quit, youth tobacco prevention activities, and technical assistance and training for healthcare providers to better assist them in helping patients quit smoking. DC residents who call the DC Quitline, 1-800-QUIT-NOW, can receive FREE patches, lozenges and counseling! To learn more about DCTFF, log on to www.dctff.info.

Free Resources for Healthcare Providers

The DC Tobacco Free Families website provides many resources to healthcare providers who may be offering tobacco dependence treatment services. Resources include information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Agency for Healthcare Research Quality (AHRQ). Providers can also locate free Continuing Medical Education courses and much more. Visit the website today!

Teenage Smoking Cessation Program: Not-On-Tobacco

Not-On-Tobacco is a state-of-the-art program specifically designed for teenagers who want to stop smoking. It was developed by the American Lung Association in collaboration with researchers at West Virginia University.

N-O-T does more than teach teens how to stop smoking successfully. It uses a life management skills approach so young people learn how to reduce stress, make decisions, and communicate more effectively with family and friends.

For more information about this program, call (202) 546-5864.

The materials provided below can help you begin the steps to quitting smoking for good. If you’ve tried to quit before and it didn’t work, the most important thing is to keep on quitting until you quit for good! Remember, the only failure is when you stop trying! You can select which of the materials can best help you based on your own smoking history.
