Breathe DC Metro Walk Raises Over 90K

More than 700 participants walked to raise awareness about lung disease in the District
                                                                              Hundreds Walk to Fight Lung Disease in the District

Saturday, June 27, 2009 - Hundreds of residents from the DC Metro area joined the American Lung Association of DC at the 2009 Breathe DC Metro Walk. To date, more than $90,000 has been raised in an effort to reach our goal of $150,000 to support free lung health and education programs being offered free of charge. ALADC thanks all of its dedicated volunteers, fundraisers and sponsors who gave many contributions to help us fight lung disease and make this Walk a success. Contributions are still being accepted through July 31st. We encourage you to continue fundraising and encourage others to sponsor a walker. Checks can be made payable to the American Lung Association of DC and mailed directly to our office: 530 7th Street, SE Washington, DC 20003.

Historic Tobacco Bill Signed by President Obama

Today, President Obama signed into law the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, granting the Food and Drug Administration regulatory power over the manufacture, sale and marketing of tobacco products.  This historic bill marks a turning point in the fight to keep Big Tobacco from luring kids into becoming the next generation of lifelong smokers.  Learn more…

 

 Registration Now Open for the 2009 Breathe DC Metro Walk!

ALADC is pleased to announce that it has broadened the scope for this year’s Walk to focus on clean air, going “green,” fighting Big Tobacco, and finding a cure asthma and other chronic illnesses affecting families in the DC Metro area. We encourage all individuals, families, clubs, corporations, and organizations to join us as we walk to help the residents of the DC Metro area “breathe easier.” To register, join a team, or make a donation, visit our website, www.breathedcmetrowalk.org.

 Swine Flu Update

The public health threat of H1N1 Flu (previously referred to as swine flu) is an ongoing, constantly changing issue. As it is a topic with a clear link to our mission,  it is imperative that we provide accurate  information to the public.

 At the bottom of the home page menu,  you will find a toolkit comprised of useful resources from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other notable health organizations with the latest updates on the H1N1 flu. Please click on the H1N1 page on the left to find these links. 

 Although the H1N1 outbreak has leveled-off, the public health sector fully expects there to be a second, possibly more severe wave.  ALADC encourages you to  rely on these sources for reliable, up-to-date information.

Statement of Charles D. Connor, American Lung Association President and CEO:

Today in Washington, the U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly voted to adopt the Senate-passed version of HR 1256, the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. This strong bipartisan vote by the House means this legislation will now be sent to President Obama for his signature. The President has stated publicly that he will sign this bill into law once it reaches his desk, and we ask him to do so quickly. Read the entire statement.
